Artist Statement

Complex layering of biomorphic shapes, interweaving design, and saturated colors only begin to describe my unique metal sculptures.  Looking into any one of my sculptures will take you deep into a maze of parts, design, formal unities, and holistic composition that will give you a sense of revelation into the sculptures design and meaning.  I use an array of techniques and processes to complete my aluminum sculptures.   My metal working process employs MIG and TIG welding, plasma cutting, and grinding.  When fabrication is complete, the color process begins.  Using an array of brushes, airbrushes, and paint moving tools I coat my work with a saturated translucent automotive finish. These special techniques are used to create vital effects in the work that treat each shape as its own abstract painting while simultaneously working in conjunction with the whole sculpture.

My work blends modern abstract sensibilities with formal subjects. My current work includes ocean life which relates to my fascination with the ocean especially scuba diving, spear fishing, and boating.  The hearts symbolize a strong connection to my family and a love of life, and my modern abstracts illustrate a passion for vibrant color and form. I am interested in the physical act that goes into creating my work.  I describe it as a performance or dance with the material...a chance to change something raw into something beautiful.

As a young boy the spark for welding and the creative process was set as I watched my father weld and braze metals into unique sculptures. Originally from Miami, I have lived in Pinellas County most of my life. I started my art career as an abstract painter while at St. Petersburg College and later moved into metal sculpture after receiving my Bachelors of Arts in Fine Art from the University of South Florida.  I taught art for Pinellas County schools for 5 years and then I began my professional art career attending art festivals around the state. Since 2005, I have been a full time professional artist and built my own studio in 2009.

Some of my major public and corporate collections include All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, 400 Beach Restaurant, Salt Rock Grill, the City of Pinellas Park, Pinellas Gateway Chamber of Commerce and Homewood Suites.  My work can also be seen in Public Art exhibits around the state. I am currently exhibiting at Sculpture 360 in Clearwater and Art Loud in Tampa. I was also recently featured on the cover of Tampa Bay Magazine.  For now, I continue to showcase my work at my own studio, select galleries, art festivals, and selected Tampa Bay charities.  My work is always changing and improving.  I believe I have been blessed to find my passion early in life and truly love what I do.
